Tidal Wave Accounting

One story mentioned nine Japanese tourists
swept away while watching the elephants

in a Sri Lankan zoo. So many people
from so many countries died, most of them

walking distance from home, yet so many
stories decorate the deaths of tourists

as if their lives merit ink over locals—
nine zoo-gazers, nine, ten thousand Sri Lankans—

me thinking about the elephants, how many,
what about mahouts, how do elephants fall?
