when we create

This quote from Wallace Stevens surprised me:

"The trouble is, however, that men in general do not create in light and warmth alone. They create in darkness and coldness. They create when they are hopeless, in the midst of antagonisms, when they are wrong, when their powers are no longer subject to their control. They create as the ministers of evil."

Hi, I was hoping you could tell me what page this quote is featured on in Stevens essay (I think its the Noble Rider...). Yep a reaction to modernism.

  2. Robert Polito used this quote as an epigraph to one section of his biography of Jim Thompson. I don't know beyond that.
